Climate

Climate

This region of the UK is classed as oceanic, which typically means cool winters with warmer summers, but with rain at any time during the year, especially during the winter months. Annually, around 1,000 millimetres (39 in) of rain falls, which increases up to 2,000 mm (79in) at higher altitudes.

Summer months see average temperatures range from 18°C (64°F) to 22°C (72°F), with winter months ranging from 1°C (34°F) to 4°C (39°F). Wind comes into the region from the south west and north east, making it the second windiest region in the UK.

Although the area is almost completely surrounded by coastal regions, in inland areas rainfall is lower, and enjoy higher average temperatures in summer months. In winter months coastal temperatures are typically higher than they are in inland areas, but lower maximum temperatures in the summer, due to the sea temperature and coastal breezes.
