Our algorithms use statistics from official sources to build a big picture of each of the 34,753 Lower Super Output Areas (LSOA) in England and Wales, including Ofsted, ONS and Census 2011 data.

About our Desirability Results

We absolutely love working with hyperlocal data. It runs in our blood.

So when we got the idea to rank the 'desirability' of each location in England, we jumped at the chance.

When founder Chris Haycock initially thought of the idea, it was a lot to take in. How could we possibly rank each location based on people's interpretation of desirability? After all, desirability is subjective, isn't it?

First, we had to put together a list of the factors that most people would consider as being desirable. These included low crime rates, good living standards, access to good education and low unemployment rates were first to be chosen. After that, it was a case of identifying other factors that most people would find attractive, including low indeces of deprivation, demographics and low flood risk, amongst others.

Putting it all together to rank everything in order was a tricky process, and it took some time to get just right. Certain factors were given addition weighting, others had slightly less to represent the importance of particular factors. The algorithm took almost ten days to get just right!

We did think about access to amenities such as leisure centres, cinemas, shopping centres, etc. However, the proximity to these amenities aren't a factor for many people; living out in the sticks far away from anything is quite often attractive, so we didn't include it.

If you would like us to look at including other factors that you think make a desirable location, then please get in touch and we can look at including it in these statistics.

Remember, these statistics are based upon cold, hard numbers only. They may not (and probably will not) reflect the true desirability, which sometimes can only come down to a 'gut-feeling' about a particular area. Use the results as a guide only, and please do not make any financial decisions based on these findings, because we can't be held responsible for the information we have provided here.
