Climate
Climate
The Midlands area has a temperate maritime climate which is in line with much of the UK in terms of temperature. The region is typically dry and sunny in the summer, and cold, wet and cloudy in the winter. Temperatures range from 31.3° C; (31.3° F) in the winter, to 24.1° C (75.4° F) during the summer months.
However, much like other large urban regions, city centres such as Birmingham have a considerable urban heat island effect. Cities are often significantly warmer than their surrounding countryside areas due to human activities.
Because the area has a comparatively high elevation, the region can see significant quantities of snow during the winter. Extreme weather can be very rare, although there have been some instances of tornados affecting the region - the most recent being in 2015 in the inner Birmingham area, which damaged homes in the area.
